Monthly Unemployment Situation – April 2022
For release: 6 June 2022
Unemployment rates stayed low, after declining to pre-COVID levels in February 2022. Unemployment rate trended lower over the month for citizens in April 2022 (from 3.2% to 3.1%), and held steady at its pre-pandemic levels for residents (3.0%) and the overall labour force (2.2%). 72,400 residents1 were unemployed in April 2022, including 64,800 citizens.2,3
As the improving economy continues to drive the demand for workers and hiring expectations among firms were positive, we expect unemployment rates to stay low amid a tight labour market. Still, downside risks remain – the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and prolonged global supply disruptions could moderate labour demand.
