Chart: Entries and Exits, First Half 2020

Local employment contracted by 62,700 in 1H 2020, mainly as more locals (170,200) exited employment compared to a year ago (128,700). Food & Beverages Services saw the largest increase in number of locals exiting employment over the year, as the industry was affected by social distancing measures implemented in 2Q 2020 as a result of COVID-19.

Foreign employment also shrank (-66,400) in 1H 2020 as foreign entries into employment reached a record low (68,800) while foreign exits (135,200) were comparable to a year ago (140,400). Most of the decline in foreign entries were in Construction as construction activities were put on hold for a large part of 1H 2020, amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. Broad-based declines in foreign entries were also observed in the remaining industries.
