For release: 7 July 2022

The unemployment situation in May 2022 was similar to that of April 2022 (overall: 2.2%; resident: 3.0%; citizen: 3.1%). The rates had trended down since peaking in October 2020. There were 72,300 residents unemployed in May 2022, of which 64,700 were citizens. 2, 3

Unemployment rates are expected to stay low, amidst a tight labour market and high levels of vacancies. The likelihood of a downturn in Singapore remains low. However, the global economy is facing significant headwinds - a global economic slowdown and strong inflationary pressures - which could impact business decisions. These are exacerbated by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and COVID-19 pandemic in economies such as China.
